How to Keep Your Pets Safe on Moving Day

Moving day can be a hectic and stressful day. If you have pets, then moving day can be even harder for you. The good news is that there are several things that you can do if you have a moving company coming to your home.

Board Your Pets

It will be best for you to not have your pets in the home on the day of your move. You can make arrangements for your pets to stay with a family member or friend. You can also drop them off at a kennel. You can leave your pets there until it is time for you to take them to their new home.

Designate a Pet Room

If you do not have the option of boarding your pet or leaving them with a family member or friend, then you should designate a pet room. You should have everything cleared out of the pet room except food, water and pet toys. If your pet uses a litter box, then you will need to have it in the room.

You should prepare your pet for the room by having them go in it a few days before the move. Have them spend short periods of time in the room.

Use Crates And Carriers

If you want to provide extra security for your pet, then you should keep them in a crate or carrier. The crate or carrier should be large enough for your dog or cat to move around in comfortably.

Post Pet Signs

You should let the movers know that there are pets in the home. You can put up a sign that says “Do Not Open the Door, Pet Is Inside” on the door. You may also want to write your cell phone number on the sign.

Use Caution in the Car

If you have a cat or small dog, then you should keep them in the crate while they are in the car. You should secure your dog with a seat belt if they are not in a crate. It is a good idea to use a harness that is specifically designed for the car.

Walk Your Dog or Cat

You should have your dog or cat walk around the new home so that they can get familiar with it. This will allow them to get comfortable with the environment.
