Who We Are
Over 100 years ago, Patrick Hughes landed in Philadelphia from Ireland and began traveling the streets with a horse drawn cart, moving pianos and household items throughout the area. In 1977, Robert M. Hughes, a great grandson of Patrick Hughes, formed a local moving company. Starting with one truck, Hughes concentrated on servicing local moving clients throughout Philadelphia and the Main Line. By 1980 the firm was handling 500 local moves per year and was recognized by Philadelphia Magazine as “The Best Mover in Philly”. In 1982 the company acquired Fischer’s Transfer in Doylestown, and affiliated with the #1 van line in the country – United Van Lines. These and many other achievements situated the company for growth. Other moving companies continued to be acquired, including Louderback Moving Services, an agent for Mayflower. This put Hughes in the unique position of being able to offer moving services through United Van Lines or Mayflower.
An expansion into Florida gave Hughes the ability to service the entire North/Central Florida market, including Gainesville and Ocala. The operation supplements the household goods and special product divisions with an extensive East Coast hauling fleet. In addition Hughes maintains 45,000 square feet of storage space in Ocala, Florida for warehousing and distribution.
In 2008 Hughes moved the company headquarters into a new 60,000 square foot facility in Lansdale, PA. Conveniently located just off Exit 31 of the Pennsylvania Turnpike, this location allows Hughes Relocation Services to easily handle moves in the cities and suburbs of Philadelphia and Allentown, including the counties of Bucks, Montgomery, Chester, Delaware, Lehigh and Northampton. Hughes Relocation Services has become one of the largest and most versatile agents of United Van Lines. The reputation for service and integrity begun 100 years ago by the Hughes family continues to be enhanced.
